New Laurel Cemetery in Carroll County

In 1958, approximately 300 gravestones and far fewer human remains were moved to a new location in Carroll County.

“The Ellsworth Armacost Funeral establishment was engaged for $15,500 to move the dead from the cemetery to Carroll County. All the bodies were moved this fall, according to an official of the establishment” (Evening Sun 11/18/1958).

Norman Collins of Carroll County dug holes for 90% of the bodies in Carroll County. He “Figures eight to 12 full bodies were moved from Belair Road to Carroll County. ‘The rest were all partial bodies,’ he says. ‘Most of those here got only two-foot by two-foot boxes. A couple of hundred of them.’ Many tombstones at the new cemetery mark nothing at all but memories; the ground beneath them is empty, Collins says” (Evening Sun 1/2/1991).
