Biographical Text

Wayman was born free in Caroline County, Maryland to Francis and Matilda Wayman.  He was taught to read by his father, who owned valuable waterfront property. 

 

  • In 1837 he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church
  • Joined the A.M.E. Church in 1840
  • Traveled to southern cities during the Civil War establishing A.M.E. churches
  • Elected 7th Bishop in the A.M.E. Church in 1864
  • Received Doctorate of Divinity from Howard University in 1877
  • In 1881 authored My Recollections of A.M.E. Ministers
  • Published Cyclopedia of African Methodism with over 1000 entries in 1882
  • Authored The Life of James Alexander Shorter: One of the Bishops of the A.M.E. Church
